Advocacy efforts have contributed to:
  • the redesign of a dangerous intersection, addition of speed limit signs in busy area, upgrading and repainting of crosswalks
  • Police Department implementing a Selective Traffic Education Enforcement Program that has included:
    • conducting sting operations at key intersections, citing motorists who violate pedestrian right of way
    • a radar gun program monitoring speed limit violations
    • hanging pedestrian enforcement banners on main downtown streets
    • new school warning signs at all elementary schools
    • street embedded pedestrian warning signs at two schools

Partnerships with:

  • School District PTA Council and School Principals to bring "Walk & Roll to School Day" to Alameda
  • Public Works Department: retrofit existing intersections and design new ones to provide better pedestrian access and safety, traffic calming improvements, develop proactive approaches to new development coming into the city, preparing Safe Routes to Schools grant applications
  • Police Department on enforcement and education techniques
  • PTA Council in introducing "Keep Kids Alive. Drive 25" campaign

Community Involvement:

  • Town Hall meeting on "Creating Pedestrian Friendly Cities" with a panel of transportation experts
  • Speaking at local service clubs: Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions
  • Pedestrian Safety Week activities at six dangerous intersections urging motorists to slow down and drive safely
  • Co-sponsored a Candidates’ Forum for a county supervisory race emphasizing transportation issues.
