Lace Up your Shoes with Alameda Walks!
The Alameda Collaborative for Children,
Youth & Their Families (ACCYF), in partnership
with Alameda Recreation & Parks Department,
and Pedestrian Friendly Alameda begins the fourth
year of Alameda Walks! on Saturday, May 3.
The
one-hour walks are scheduled on the first three
Saturdays of each month, May 3 through October 18. We
invite everyone to join us. This is a way
of getting together to walk our neighborhoods,
explore our parks and a perfect way to get
into shape and have fun at the same time," said
ACCYF co-chairs, mayor Beverly Johnson, School
Board Trustee Janet Gibson and Alameda County
Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker.
"Even though I have grown up in Alameda,
it is still a pleasure to walk with old and
newcomers around the historical points in
Alameda," said Gwen Pirack, frequent
Alameda Walks participant.
"Walking the neighborhoods not only
with your legs, but with your eyes as well
is the perfect way to learn about and know
your home town. Add friendly people
and you will know what Alameda Walks is all
about," said Nancy Godfrey, who has
been walking with the group since its inception.
The
first walk on May 3 will begin at 9 a.m.
Walkers will gather at the Lincoln Park High
Street entrance, between Santa Clara and
Central. Always look for the red Alameda
Walks hats!
The entire walk schedule will
be posted on the following websites: www.alamedayouth.org; www.ci.alameda.ca.us/arpd,
and www.pedfriendly.org.
Reservations are not necessary.
"Lace up those shoes," says ACCYF co-chair
Janet Gibson, "and
begin your day with an energy-boosting walk. We are looking forward to
meeting people and exploring our community." Alameda with
its flat tree-lined streets, interesting neighborhoods and architecture, and
expansive water views, offers something for every walker.
The
Alameda Collaborative for Children, Youth & Their
Families is a consortium of youth-serving public
and non-profit agencies and community leaders
with expertise and interest in the needs of
our community’s children and families.
