Ten elementary schools and two middle schools
participated in Alameda’s 2008 Walk & Roll to School
Day, joining communities around the world in celebrating how
much fun it is to walk, bicycle, scooter or skateboard to school.
An additional focus was on fitness and nutrition.
Elementary school children who turned in a completed Walk & Roll to School Survey received a special gift. All youth received a sticker and each school created their own special activities. "Shape Up Alameda" was conducted with local fitness center trainers leading all 4800 kids in exercises before their first class began. A new element were introduced this year: the Alameda Hospital Healthy Walk. A principal or key person was identified at each elementary school and given a pedometer. They tracked how many steps they walked during the school day for the week of October 1. The person with the most steps received Healthy Snack bookmarks for all kids in that school.
Important reasons why we Walk & Roll to School:
- To teach children safe walking behaviors, such as how to cross streets, and how to select safe routes to school.
- To see how easy and enjoyable it is for adults and children to spend healthy, active time together doing the world's simplest exercise - walking.
- To identify specific steps to create more walkable communities such as advocating for more crosswalks, sidewalks, crossing guards and better driver behavior.
A special thank you to all the PTA Walk Coordinators, community volunteers and local businesses who helped make this year's event a huge success and particularly to all the kids and parents who enthusiastically participated.
